Course Information
- In this class, we shall be looking at selected pieces of American literature and art with the goal of comparing and contrasting the different ways the artists reflect their times, deal with issues such as gender, race, and class, and engage readers/viewers.
- While I have chosen and paired the materials and arranged their sequence, the interests of the class members and the nature of this class will in large part guide the focus of our hopefully lively discussions.
- The editions of the three novels we will be reading are listed below. However, if you prefer to use a library book or download a book , that will be fine. You also can get online used copies of these novels at substantial discounts.
Theodore Dreiser Sister Carrie (1900)
Willa Cather Death Comes to the Archbishop
Christina Kline A Piece of the World
- See the weekly schedules for the short stories and poems we will be reading and their on-line links. Please let me know if you have difficulty finding these works.
- In the weekly schedules I have listed some of the works of art we will be examining. I do reserve the right to add or to detract from this list. If you want to Google the works of art before class, feel free to so; however, that is not necessary, as I shall be showing them in class.
